The world of model railroading and other hobbies

I still play with trains

That's right. I still play with trains, even as I approach the crest of "the hill." Yep ... that's right ... trains.
I have two layouts in progress. While it'd be nice to complete them someday, I know that for most model railroaders, a layout is never truly complete.

While childish to some, the hobby is an escape for others.
I have created two worlds in miniature. It is always autumn in my worlds. No 95-degree days or -5 nights. No rules except to escape the worries, troubles and hectic pace of modern life and delve into a simpler time. Rule No. 1 is to have fun.

Certainly I don't remember my first experience with the Lionel chugging around the tree during the holidays, but according to the photos in the old family album, I liked what I saw. I still have those trains, though they are boxed up and rarely see use.
With a great-grandfather who once worked for New York Central/Penn Central railroad and the Lionel running at Christmastime, I was destined to jump on board.
I always wanted a "real" layout. I had a couple small, unrealistic and rather cramped set-ups over the years, and spent lengthy stints away from the hobby. Then a little extra space in mom's basement and an empty bedroom at home changed all that.
Through this blog, I hope to introduce the hobby to those who might be considering a layout. To those who already have constructed a prototype or freelanced empire, I plan to offer some tips and tricks I have learned over the past 10 or so years.
I also look forward to sharing the knowledge of others who read this blog and wish to share their knowledge and love of model railroading with others.
Next time, I'll work on getting newcomers on the right track with some tips on getting started.
After that, who knows where the rails will lead. Jump aboard and come along for the ride.
